To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you. I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else. The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us. He who has God and everything else has no more than he who has God only.
Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness. It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
When we Christians behave badly, or fail to behave well, we are making Christianity unbelievable to the outside world. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. And out of that hopeless attempt has come nearly all that we call human history—money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery—the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.
What we want is not more little books about Christianity, but more little books by Christians on other subjects--with their Christianity latent. Christianity seems at first to be all about morality, all about duties and rules and guilt and virtue, yet it le you on, out of all that, into something beyond. One has a glimpse of a country where they do not talk of those things, except perhaps as a joke.
Every one there is filled full with what we should call goodness as a mirror is filled with light. But they do not call it goodness. They do not call it anything. They are not thinking of it. They are too busy looking at the source from which it comes.
Now that I am a Christian I do have moods in which the whole thing looks improbable: but when I was an atheist I had moods in which Christianity looked terribly probable. We live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and private: and therefore starved for meditation and true friendship. I have received no assurance that anything we can do will eradicate suffering.
I think the best are obtained by people who work quietly away at limited objectives, such as the abolition of the slave trade, or prison reform, or factory acts, or tuberculosis, not by those who think they can achieve universal justice, or health, or peace. I think the art of life consists in tackling each immediate evil as well as we can. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already.
Not hoping to get to Heaven as a reward for your actions, but inevitably wanting to act in a certain way because a first faint gleam of Heaven is already inside you. If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair. Anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself.
That is why an uneducated believer like Bunyan was able to write a book that has astonished the whole world. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later.
That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. In Science we have been reading only the notes to a poem; in Christianity we find the poem itself. There have been men before who got so interested in proving the existence of God that they came to care nothing for God himself, as if the good Lord had nothing to do but to exist. There have been some who were so preoccupied with spreading Christianity that they never gave a thought to Christ.
Enemy-occupied territorythat is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us to take part in a great campaign of sabotage. I gave up Christianity at about Came back to it when getting on for Not an emotional conversion; almost purely philosophical.
I didn't want to. I'm not in the least a religious type. I want to be let alone, to feel I'm my own master; but since the facts seemed to be just the opposite, I had to give in.
